Marketing your business isn’t optional if you want it to be successful. So how do we ensure we’re spending the right amount of time working on our marketing, and how frequently do we need to do that? While daily marketing can sound daunting, it doesn’t have to be.

The Secret to Growing Your Business In The Next Year

The secret to growing your business in the next year. It’s a bold statement. But I promise you, it will change your life and business if you implement it. 

The secret to growing your business is this: 

In your available working hours, prioritise the things that grow your business. 

Use your best energy to do the things that grow your business. 

So many of us pop the kettle on, make a brew, sit down at our computers, and open our emails. Or open our orders and start packing.

Those things, while necessary, are not the things that will grow your business tomorrow. 

So as we look ahead to the next year, start with the things that will help you grow. 

Marketing is what helps you grow your business.

Start your day with 1 hour of marketing.

For some, you will want to spend your best energy on creating new products. Maybe the start of your day is a morning in the studio painting before you get to your desk. 

Once you get to your desk? Don’t prioritise other people’s needs from you until after you’ve done an hour of marketing. Tomorrow, I’ll share some practical task ideas for your marketing time. 

An hour a day is based on people who work full-time or close to full-time hours. If you can only manage 20 or 30 minutes - that’s fine! 

Do what you can, but start your days with the things that will get you where you want to be tomorrow.

Marketing Is Not Optional

Is marketing a “nice to have” in your business? 

Are the marketing tasks you complete an afterthought once all the more urgent things have been completed?

You can grow a business by accident, but it’s uncommon. 

Without marketing, your business will be an expensive hobby for a while. 

That isn’t to be discouraging, but marketing is not an optional activity for business owners. It’s the thing that keeps your business moving forward, and if you haven’t had to focus on it a lot yet, it’s likely because you’re benefiting from someone else’s marketing. 

Let’s take marketplaces as an example.

As you know, I run a marketplace. If you think about a platform like Etsy, you can list your products there, and then you don’t necessarily need to actively do anything to get sales. For instance, there may be an amount of organic traffic reaching your shop without you mentioning it on social media. 

That’s because Etsy has been marketing its brand & getting traffic to its platform for years and years. 

The reason we often ignore marketing is that it requires us to step out of our comfort zone. Maybe we don’t like talking about our products or services because it feels like we’re selling or sleazy. It’s uncomfortable. Maybe we feel overwhelmed by the technology for things like email marketing, and SEO seems complicated.

It’s highly likely that we just enjoy doing other things in our businesses! Because for most people, they don’t start an online business because they like designing marketing campaigns. 

But there must be intentional and regular marketing to grow.

Your Daily Marketing To-Do List

Now we’ve established how important daily marketing is, let’s take a look at some tasks you can sink your teeth into.

I always recommend batching your work, so completing more than one related task at a time because you don’t waste energy context switching. 

Daily task examples

  • Set up your email signature with links to your website & social channels.

  • Optimise your social media profiles.

  • Send an email to your contacts, a weekly round-up, tips & tutorials, and behind-the-scenes.

  • Create your social media graphics & captions, and schedule them for the week

  • Respond to comments & messages.

  • Engage in groups on Facebook/LinkedIn.

  • Create a lead magnet or “freebie” for your email list.

  • Research your next two blog posts.

  • Write a blog post.

  • Review your analytics & make an action plan.

  • Respond to some journalist requests (#journorequest or HARO/Help a Reporter Out).

  • Build or maintain an advert campaign. This could be Facebook and Instagram Adverts, Pinterest Adverts, or Google Ads.

Once you know what marketing channels you’re focusing on, you can be intentional about creating content for them and updating them regularly by planning out your week. 

 

Marketing can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Dedicating regular time to it every day will reap more rewards than doing nothing, no matter how short that time is.
