I love an analogy to set the scene, so here are a couple of analogies I use to help explain what communicating with AI is like…

Imagine visiting a country whose language you speak…

… but the culture, dialects, slang, and day-to-day use of language is completely different in so many ways.

You know how to ask for what you want, but the way it’s received is completely different than when you’re at home, so you might get an unexpected response.

Or think of a time you asked someone for advice, but the response you got was way off base.

Was it because your friend misunderstood you? Or was it because you didn’t quite have the clarity to ask for what you needed? Or probably, a bit of both!

There are specific ways to communicate with Large Language Models that will give us a much better rate of success when it comes to asking for what we want…

… And that’s where prompt engineering comes in!
